Comin’ In and Out of the Cave

There are various forms of life—from genes to species to the wide-ranging scale of ecosystems. We refer to this variety of all forms of life as ‘biodiversity.’ These species dwell in any places on Earth. Some of them live on trees; others dwell in caves. Artifacts would tell us that even prehistoric men lived in caves. During those times, they painted pictures on the cave walls. These people who live in caves are called cave dwellers.

King's Curtain, Sumaging Cave

A cave is a natural underground hollow or space, or passage. A large cave is called cavern. Aside from being underground, a cave may be found at the side of a hill or a mountain, or under a cliff. When water runs through an area with enough force to wear away rocks, a cave can be formed. Then as the water evaporates over the years, it leaves deposits of calcium carbonate called calcites. Hence, calcites form rock sculptures which are called stalactites and stalagmites. Stalagmites can be found on the ground, while stalactites hang from the ceiling. They become columns when they come together in the center.

Exploring or excavating caves will surely give you a thrill. The science of exploring and studying all aspects of caves and their surrounding environments is called speleology. Exploring a cave for recreation is called caving, potholing, or spelunking.

Have you been spelunking?

My friends and I did. We went to Sagada to experience the thrill of long-hours trekking and caving. Sagada is endowed with wonderful caves, and one of these caves is the Sumaging Cave. Did you know that it is the deepest cave in terms of vertical range and the fifth longest cave in terms of length in the Philippines? It has six entrances leading to a complex mix of active and fossil cave which is remarkable for its large passages and exciting gours. This cave is the third most famous cave in the country.

Keeping My Life While Distance-Learning

Keeping My Life While Distance-Learning

by Tessa Sambat

Educating oneself is an integral part of life. You have to be educated to improve your knowledge, talents, and skills. Different educational programs aim to facilitate the process of learning in several educational institutions.  There is also the option of learning from some of these institutions from the comfort of home.

Why choose distance education instead of the traditional classroom setup?

Several reasons can be listed why students are into distance learning. Students who have health problems, for example those with physical disabilities, could prefer to enroll themselves in distance education. Some students could want to have foreign diplomas even without residing in their chosen countries to study.

Not to mention the expensiveness of the tuition fee in studying abroad, I did choose to find an institution that would offer a distance education program through a scholarship grant. It’s the best way to study abroad inexpensively and balance my work with my studies reasonably, since I want to keep working from here.

How to choose distance education programs?

You should look for a distance education program that offers the degrees that you want. Considering your learning style in choosing a program that fits you is also a must. It’s better to choose a school that allows you to submit your work online rather than submitting your work by mail. Some schools do have this practice and it’s very costly on your part. Look for schools that offer greater support from teachers. Some schools offer little support or no support at all to their students. Distance learning schools should provide tools for interaction between students and professors. This is usually done through email, phone patch, podcast, webcast, chat, forum, and the like.

Since studying requires effort and time, look for a distance learning school that fits your schedule. Some schools allow their students to finish their work at their own pace, while others don’t. They want their students to finish their work at a set study tempo. School accreditation is also a vital consideration in choosing your distance education program. And lastly, consider the financial costs of your program. Some schools offer cheap tuition fees, while others have brain-draining tuition fees that would really give you migraines! However, there are schools that offer financing or even full-tuition scholarships. And I think I have chosen the right distance learning school that fits my needs.

How does it feel studying online?

Since distance learning is a contemporary process of education, it includes numerous obstacles that could really change students’ plans. And I think I did.

Changes, however, are inevitable. You don’t really know what lies ahead. I was thinking beforehand that studying Geographical Information Systems (GIS) online could be well balanced with my work since I’ll be studying at my own pace. However, I was wrong! When I was admitted to the program and did some advanced readings on the course, I decided to quit from my job to concentrate more on my studies, since it will require a lot of time and effort.

It took me a few months to realize that distance learning isn’t just a few clicks on my mouse. I also spend much time studying– reading the lectures and other literature, watching the videos and slide presentations, doing assignments, and answering practical exercises. Frankly speaking, GIS is a bit of a tough course. Aside from requiring a solid background in information technology, specifically the technical skills, GIS requires you to have a strong knowledge base in geography. I am really thankful for the help and advice from my professor, Mr. Martin Sjöström, and Ms. Roda Tejuco (teacher and textbook editor).

What I like about studying online is that I can live and study anywhere. It doesn’t require commuting, which saves me time and money. I can schedule learning around other facets of my personal and professional life. I can still keep my life going while enhancing my learning from a distance!

The Long Wait Is Over

Just like any war,  every aspect of our lives would be affected by changes brought about by the twist of fate. Just like any film, everything has an end, and so with those things you’re looking for a long time. The long wait is over, I finally got a copy of my all-time-fave film–In Love and War.

In war, they found each other; in each other, they found love.

Based on the book, Hemingway In Love and War by Henry Villard and James Nagel, In Love and War is a romance drama film which is hugely based on the real-life experiences in World War I of one of the greatest writers of all times–Ernest Hemingway.

During the World War I, Hemingway volunteered to be an ambulance driver for the Italian front. He then moved to Italy where he met the girl who had changed his life forever. When he was giving his services for the Italian front, he got wounded and was sent to a military hospital. He was taken care of Agnes von Kurowsky, an American Red Cross volunteer nurse. The two of them fell in love, but their relationship didn’t work out. Ernest got deeply affected by his relationship with Agnes. This was the reason why he came up with his novel, “A Farewell to Arms.” And that is why the greatest journey is the distance between two people.

The Storm Is Over: From Dusk Till Dawn

The New Horizon

Just like storms or seasons, CHANGES are always INEVITABLE.

Transformation is related to “change.”

When there are changes, there are also transformations.

And when there are transformations, there are positive and negative feedback.

There are positive and negative outcomes.

Now, what have you realized back then?

A Long Journey Ahead: The Promises You Should Keep

Sometimes promises are hard to keep. You must be decisive to keep that promise; especially if someone awaits for that promise or holds onto that promise. Since a long journey is ahead of us, we must not remain where we are. We should move forward to fullfill those promises we have kept for a certain time.  Haven’t you?

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening

by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
